How Long Does It Take to Make a Custom Children's Book?
The short answer: a custom AI book takes about five minutes from "I clicked create" to "PDF in my inbox." A printed and shipped hardcover takes about two weeks total. Here's how those numbers break down.
Digital book (~5 minutes)
Photo upload: 30-60 seconds depending on your connection.
Answering the five questions (name, age, interests, favorites, avoid): 1-2 minutes.
Story generation: 10-15 seconds. The language model writes the full story in one shot.
Illustration generation: 2-3 minutes. This is the slow part — each of the 13 pages is generated in parallel but the longest one sets the pace.
PDF assembly: 15 seconds. Fonts, layout, page numbers, cover, export.
Total: usually 4-6 minutes. Sometimes longer if the illustration queue is busy. You'll see a live progress bar the whole time.
Hardcover print (~2 weeks)
We print through Lulu. Their production time is 3-5 business days for hardcover. Standard shipping from their facility is usually 5-10 business days. Add the digital generation time at the start and you're looking at about two weeks door-to-door.
For rush gifts, order the digital version the night before and get the hardcover as a follow-up arriving after — makes the gift stretch across two moments instead of one.
